KOTA GEDE, OLD CAPITAL OF JAVA (PSK EXC 10)

Though Kota Gede is a little more than a village, it is steeped in history. Our morning tour explores Kota Gede’s cultural and monumental heritages. The first is at Kota Gede’s market that had been the center of development for centuries. Then we enjoy a leisurely walking tour through this old capital city, marvel at Kota Gede’s finest example of unique ‘between two gates community’ of Atmo Suprobo family, wander amid kampong houses to the monolith throne of Panembahan Senopati, the founder of the second Mataram Dynasty. Later, we se see the ruins of the palace wall. From Masjid Besar (the great mosque) we may be lucky to do a pilgrimage to Kota Gede’s Royal Tombs before wandering through its unique kampong which still retain its original character. Not to forget are its silversmiths, gold-plating cottage industryabd old houses of turn of the century-traditional Javanese Architecture. Walk between high walls that seems to lead nowhere, but, leads us to a Rudy Pesik’s owned old house that formerly belonged to a Kota Gede’s wealthy family. We visit ruins of old houses of the Kalang clan before we marvel at Anshori’s home; a fine example of well preserved Kalang’s House. (3 hours)
