People has been visiting Pantai Krakal long before the other beaches become popular. Some even mentioned that Pantai Krakal is the most beautiful among a row of beaches along the coast of Gunungkidul, such as Pantai Indrayanti, Pantai Jogan, Pantai Baron, or Pantai Pok Tunggal.
You will need a 2,5 hour drive to arrive at the location if you start from the center of Yogyakarta. Along the road to Pantai Krakal, you will find many foodstalls offering local style food, as well as seafood. Arriving on the beach, you will find a white sandy beach spread out white. Clear sea water and the rhythmic pounding of the waves add to the beauty of the beach panorama.
When you enter the beach area, you’ll be asked 10k rupiah per person. These tickets are paid at a post near Pantai Baron. Cost of the tickets already includes visit to Pantai Baron, Sundak, and Kukup. These beaches are located in the same row in Gunungkidul coast.
Along the coast, you’ll see some giant rocks. The rocks are inhabited by thousand of colourful fish. The fish live in the reefs around the rocks. Some fish, such as Damselfish with their striking yellow colors with a hint of blue, or Butterflyfish with dark stripes, will captivate you for a while.
The rocks around the beach presents an interesting challenge to be explored.. you can walk on the rocks forming a path dividing the ocean, or you can climb and enjoy the view from one of the giant rocks. You can watch some fishermen preoccupied by their fishing rod, seaching for strategic location to fish. However, some fishermen prefer to dive looking for umbal-umbal. Umbal-umbal is a kind of small marine animal that live attached to rocks. Once caught, they will be made into Rempeyek, a cracker like snack.
Pantai Krakal is also favored by surfers. Although, the surfers have to be extra careful, since the seabed is dominated by rocks. If you like to surf on the beach, you need to bring your own equipment because there are no rental available. In the area, there are a number of hotels with fairly cheap rate. So if you feel like to spend a night near the beach, you can stay at the hotel instead of bringing your tent and camping.
